Wanderers

An exhibition of paintings that explore notions of exile, nature worship, wandering Chinese hermit poets, Caspar David Friedrich’s Ruckenfigur and sky watching. Inspired by the poet Shelley’s wanderings around Switzerland and Italy from 1816 until his death in 1822, and the Pink Floyd song “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun,” the work embodies an ideal of the landscape as a private world depicted in large paintings on canvas and wood panel of starscapes and mountain ranges obscured by clouds of mist, and charts that explore interior celestial navigation.

Book Cover Sketchbook

“The mastery of great things comes with the doing of trifles; the little voyage is for the timid soul just as formidable as the big voyage for the great one. Voyages are accomplished inwardly, and the most hazardous ones, needless to say are made without moving from the spot.” ----Henry Miller

Darren Winston Bookseller is pleased to present Jeff Joyce---Book Cover Sketchbook, an exhibition of small landscape sketches painted on reclaimed book covers, often in a single sitting, incorporating the color of the cover itself as ground tone. The immediacy and scale of the paintings recall the paysages intimes of the 19th century landscape tradition. The work inhabits the intersection of literary Romanticism and the associated visual cult of nature, capturing the spirit of place with the commensurate desire to evoke the setting as an ideal, the landscape as private world and symbol of cultural yearning.

Jeff Joyce has had numerous solo exhibitions nationwide, as well as participating in group exhibitions organized by The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Harn Museum of Art, The Indianapolis Museum of Art, and The Aldrich Museum of Art.
